Catechins

Catechins are secondary metabolites that are calssified as flavonoids. Catechin compounds act as antioxidant and antitumor polyphenols. Apart from gambier, catechins can be found in a number of types of vegetables and fruits.

Tannins

Apart from catechins, tannins are the main component of the medicinal plant Gambir. Tannins are chemical compounds that belong to the polyphenol group. Tannins (catechutannic acid) are antiseptic, astringent, and antibacterial compounds found in tea leaves, acacia, kosambi, areca nut, and mangosteen peel. The tannins in the gambier plant are then classified into 2 (two) types: dihydro tannins and oxy tannins.
